Tile edgings
Expansion joint profiles
Even tile coverings that appear to be rigid are subject to expansion forces. This expansion is imperceptible to the human eye, however it can cause serious damage. The damage is manifest in cracked joints or even broken tiles. The tile covering loses its surface quality. Water can penetrate, and secondary damage can occur. Expansion joints in tile coverings are thus necessary whenever you tile on differing substrates, if the substrate already shows expansion joints, or if the tile coverings are subject to great stress.
Here it is clear what can happen if expansion joints are not taken into consideration in large rooms. The tiles crack due to tension.

In order to form a clean expansion joint, it's best to use an expansion joint profile as shown in the photo. It is simple to install and has a professional look.

Expansion joint profiles
In large concrete floor surfaces tension occurs which causes cracks. Consequently the surfaces are divided into sections with expansion joints. In this area the tile covering must also be divided into sections. Expansion joint profiles are used for this.

User tips
On the underside of the expansion joint profile there is an adhesive strip that prevents mortar from penetrating during the laying process. The profile can thus be fixed in place on the floor quickly and easily.
This characteristic means that the expansion joint profile has yet another benefit or an additional possibility for use: after careful separation of the adhesive tape the profile can be bent around the soft plastic (here shown in white) and can be used in corner areas.
The profiles with alfer®-fix universal hole pattern have a special perforation system with the largest possible perforations to allow the adhesive or mortar to penetrate for an optimum contact area between tile and substrate, furthermore with round and long perforations. You can use these to nail or screw the profile on, e.g. for pre-fixing in the wall area. This will make the later work stages easier.
